What the state requires

YES, but soft. NDCC 15.1-21-21 requires each school district to require each student to complete one-half unit of financial literacy, OR to ensure its economics or problems of democracy curriculum exposes students to listed personal finance concepts. It is a DISTRICT CURRICULUM MANDATE; financial literacy is NOT listed among the 22 units in the graduation-requirements section 15.1-21-02.2.

HB 1533 took effect August 1, 2025 (default rule for 2025 regular-session laws), i.e. the 2025-26 school year; ND DPI separately advises districts to align local curriculum to the new standards for FULL IMPLEMENTATION IN 2026-2027.
