What the state requires

Beginning in 2024–25, each local board must require all students, as a condition of graduation, to complete at least a half-credit financial literacy course during grade 11 or 12 (O.C.G.A. §20-2-149.4(b)). STATUTE ONLY: SBOE Rule 160-4-2-.48 has not been amended to reference it.

Students in their eleventh or twelfth grade years, statewide, from the 2024–25 school year. The statute names an activation year but never a first graduating class, and no GaDOE guidance settles whether that is the class of 2025 or 2026 — left null rather than inferred.

EITHER — the statute requires 'at least a half-credit course' but expressly permits delivery within existing coursework, and the half credit may count toward the mathematics, social studies, or elective unit requirement (grade 11 or 12 only). Who may teach it

O.C.G.A. §20-2-200(b)(7) (SB 220 §1-2): the teacher must (i) hold a renewable SECONDARY certificate in business, economics, mathematics, family and consumer science, or marketing; OR (ii) hold a special-education certificate with social science content designations; OR (iii) obtain the GaPSC Financial Literacy Endorsement (Rule 505-2-.194, eff. Funding a district may cite

Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding — a course generates state QBE funding only if it appears on the state-funded course list under SBOE Rule 160-4-2-.20; districts may request funding for an unlisted course via DE Form 0287 with State Board approval.
